MEMORIAL UNIVERSITY OF NEWFOUNDLAND

Description

Memorial University of Newfoundland, STIRLIN-2 System is used by the Departments of Medicine and Health Service, Chemistry, Physics, Earth Sciences, Engineering, Biochemistry, Biology and Ocean Science. Applications are: Vacuum systems cryogenic cooling, preservation of biological material, study of materials property and liquid helium cooling and conservation.

The STIRLIN-2 nitrogen liquefier was commissioned in November of 2005. The system extracts, purifies and liquefies atmospheric N2. This is an on-site technology with oxygen and nitrogen separation, using PSA technology, followed by nitrogen liquefaction. Production of liquid nitrogen is continuous and automated, with start and stop production based on liquid nitrogen storage level. The system is capable of producing up to 20 litres per hour of liquid nitrogen.
